Most online recorders send your audio to a server to process it. This one cannot: there is no server. The page is static files, your audio lives in this tab, and it disappears when you close it unless you download it first.

Is this voice recorder really private?
Yes. This page is static files with no backend, so there is nowhere for audio to be sent. The recording is held in your browser's memory and written to your disk only when you press Download. Close the tab and it is gone. The source is on GitHub if you want to check.
What audio format does it record?
It depends on your browser. Safari records M4A (AAC), Chrome and Edge record WebM with the Opus codec. Both play in modern browsers and most editing software. If you need MP3 specifically, convert the downloaded file with any audio converter.
How long can I record?
There is no built-in limit. The practical ceiling is your device memory, since audio is held in the tab until you download. Hours are usually fine, but for long sessions it is safer to record and download in chunks.
Can this transcribe my recording into text?
Not this tool, it only records. If what you want is speech turned into text as you speak, that is dictation: OpenFlow does it free and entirely on your Mac, dropping the words wherever your cursor is. For a quick browser version, try voice typing.
